Nathalie Emmanuel

Nathalie Joanne Emmanuel (born 2 March 1989) is an English actress. Emmanuel started her career in acting with theatre in the mid 1990s as she was offered roles in various West End productions such as the musical The Lion King. Her acting career began in 2006 on Sasha Valentine, a soap opera. In the following years she was a part of several British TV shows, including the sequel Maze Runner. Her mother is Dominican. Her dad is half Saint Lucian, half English. She has an older brother. Emmanuel remembered her mother's first notification of her interest in acting and desire to be an actress when she was in school at St Hilda's School. This school closed in 2014 and was replaced by Westcliff High School. She claimed that she first realized her love for acting when she was three years old. Her mother then encouraged her to take singing, dancing, as well as acting classes. In the West End production of The Lion King, Young Nala was the role as Young Nala. The next year she was made a part in Game of Thrones as Missandei Daenerys Targaryen's interpreter. In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, she confirmed that she heard about winning the role when she was working in a clothing shop as a shop assistant. Emmanuel was made a regular cast member of the show in the year 2015. Missandei is the sole prominent female persona on the show was a woman-of-colour. The scene where she was entombed in chains was disregarded by the fans. It was also called an example fodging and evoking images of slavery. Emmanuel later stated to The Guardian: The response to Missandei’s passing was so overwhelming because she was not alone. A lot of people who felt marginalized or marginalized had felt connected to her, or were perceived by them, especially women of color. It was so hard for people to let her disappear, particularly when it was done in the way that she was treated. This is how they want to honor the only woman of their race.
